Responsible Appliance Disposal

Do you know what RAD is?  Sears and Best Buy do!  Let us show you how to stay competitive at no additional cost as the big guys roll out this new service.  Beat your competitors to the punch, and be one of only a handful of retail RAD partners to join this exclusive club!

RAD is and will be an important part of new appliance sales.  We can give you a competitive advantage now while the larger slow moving competition moves in this direction.  Sears, Best Buy, and Appliance Smart have already made the commitment.  Currently, our refrigeration is all processed in compliance with RAD, making RAD partnership a painless transition for our customers.   We have the answer for regional appliance dealers in a turnkey program today!

Market research has shown this to be a very important issue for 70% of appliance purchasers with 45% responding they would even be willing to pay for the service.  The customer does care what happens to their haul away!

The EPA’s RAD program is a voluntary partnership program that began in 2006 to further help the ozone layer and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.  As part of the RAD program, partners recover ozone-depleting chemicals from old refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.  ARCA, partnered with GE has spent millions on research and development, and has built a fully automated, sealed URT refrigerator processing plant in Philadelphia (ARCA AP).  This facility is currently the only one of its kind in North America, and is  capable of removing ozone depleting blowing agents from rigid polyurethane foam within refrigerators.  More than twice as much ozone depleting blowing agent is contained within this foam than ozone depleting refrigerant found in compressors.  In addition to removing CFC’s, HCFC’s, and HFC’s from these home appliances, ARCA safely recovers mercury from switches and relays, PCB capacitors, and used oil from compressors and disposes of these hazardous materials in compliance with federal law.

Since the inception of the RAD program in 2006, the number of RAD partners has grown significantly.  Their combined efforts have resulted in a large decrease in ODS, GHG emissions, and landfill waste.  The RAD program has also saved billions of kilowatt hours which are estimated to have saved consumers hundreds of millions of dollars, not to mention the health benefits of properly disposing of dangerous hazardous materials.  This program is still in its infancy, but based on benefits reported by the EPA and less than 50 total RAD partners, the future environmental and financial savings are projected to be immense.

J.S. Fesmire Hauling Inc. has a long standing relationship with ARCA AP, and we are one of only a select few appliance hauling companies to have access to this new RAD compliant plant.  We provide regular reporting and a detailed breakdown of recycled and disposed of hazardous materials which enables our customers to accurately make annual EPA reporting.  The EPA then calculates these program benefits and provides partner recognition for achievement, such as through press releases, brochures, articles, and awards.  We at Fesmire Hauling pride ourselves on great customer service, and are happy to be able to pass on these benefits to our customers, and do our part as an environmentally responsible company.

By conventional methods, only 75.4% of the average refrigerator is being recycled.  Simply put, a lot is slipping through the cracks.  We can do better!  ARCA AP has the solution to combat this problem.

With RAD and the use of the URT refrigerator processing system, 96.4% of a refrigerator can be recycled.  With this 21% increase, not only are toxic, hazardous, and ozone depleting substances being kept out of the environment, but we can also see an 85.4% landfill reduction.
